PROOFING
Proofing simply means keeping the pests out. There are many ways that this can be achieved:
- Brush strip at base of doors can help prevent rodent access beneath the door
- Fly screens prevent flying insects entering food preparation areas
- Avistrand and ecopic discourage pigeons from landing or roosting on window ledges.
- Strip curtain doors can help stop birds entering production areas but still leave easy access for personnel
ELECTRONIC FLY KILLING MACHINES
A number of different types and makes of machines are available from Quest, with all new units are guaranteed for 1 year. The choice and size of the machine is dependant on the area to be covered; traditional fly killing machines use a high voltage grid to kill flying insects, which are attracted to the unit by an ultra violet light source within the unit. UV tubes must be replaced each year to maximise the attractiveness and effectiveness of the unit.
FUMIGATION
What is fumigation?
- Fumigation is the process of applying a fumigant gas into a sealed air tight container to kill the pests within.
- A fumigant is a chemical which exists as a gas at normal temperature, different to a conventional pesticide in that at the end of the fumigation process there are no chemical residues left within the fumigated goods.
- Fumigants are a valuable group of pesticides that kill insects when other forms of control are not feasible.
- Fumigants kill all stages of insect life.
- No need to unpack most commodities as fumigants penetrate deep within the goods
- Different gases and different methods.
The objective of fumigation
The object of fumigation is to create a sealed gas tight environment or structure into which a sufficient concentration of the fumigant gas may be held at a suitable temperature and for a sufficient time in order to kill the pest within and for the fumigant gas to be ventilated safety at the end of the fumigation.
The advantages of fumigation
- Provided conditions described under objectives of fumigation are achieved, advantages include:
- Fumigants defuse and penetrate into cracks crevices and commodities and will kill all developmental stages and adult pests.
- Kills of over 99% of pests present can be achieved.
- When used at the correct concentrations fumigants leave negligible residues and so can be safely used on both animal and human foodstuffs.
- Some fumigants act very quickly and can kill pests within a few hours.
- As they penetrate commodities in buildings and stacks to reach the pest within, fumigants can be used where baits, dusts or sprays are ineffective.
